Password Protecting help me plz

i have been looking all over the net for help on this and i havent found a site that has helped fully i was to password protect a dirctory. can any 1 help me!

the path is /var/www/html/gt/
and the script i want to protect index.html
also i got a script that will generate the user bit but how do i put like the relem bit?
