Server Specifications - Overkill or Just Right?

I'm planning on building a server. I'm thinking in the range of Pentium 3 @ 1.0 GHZ to a Pentium 4 @ 1.6 GHZ.

It will need to handle up to 300 websites. Most of these sites will use very little bandwidth, disk space and system resources. There will be a small number of sites that use more in terms of system resources such as bulletin boards that use MySQL and average about 5 GB of traffic per month. A small number of other sites may use CGI scripts to a moderate or heavy degree.

1. Anyone else running 300 sites in a similar fashion on a slower machine successfully?

2. And given the above information, what is better?

* 1024 MB of SDRAM RAM
* 512 MB of DDR RAM

DDR RAM is of course twice as fast as SDRAM. Do you think that this speed increase might negate the need for more RAM?

3. Do you think DDR RAM for a server is overkill or unnecessary?

[EDITED TO ADD]
4. Would a Pentium 3 @ 1.0 GHZ be sufficient?
[/EDITED TO ADD]

Interested in hearing everyones thoughts...

Thanks,
