ftp problems

i do some free hosting for friends, people who need 'just some free hosting' as an alternative to geocrap/angelfire/tripod etc. on redhat 7.2 and i have run into a problem with someone using cute ftp pro 1.0...

i have created the account with webmin, (lack of $ for a cp), set the home directory, password, etc. and group, which is www... proftpd locks users in the www group into thier set home directory... well, i set the account up like i said, when he logs in using cute ftp pro 1.0, it gives him root on the server... ive checked it in cute ftp pro 2.0, and it goes, and is locked where it should be, same with ws_ftp, and some other ftp programs... no problems... is this a bug in cuteftp, or the way proftpd locks the user into the home directory?
