Optimize MySQL for heavy concurrent access?

I read a while back that there was a way to optimize MySQL for heavy concurrent access from message boards and the like.

My message board seems to crap out when there's 100+ users listed as being online...there are "could not connect to database" errors until the # of users dwindle down.

This is on a Plesk5 box. Any suggestions or links for MySQL optimization, or is the default Plesk config already tuned for max performance?
