Ping (ICMP) -- should it be enabled?
All sites on my dedicated server work just fine (http, ftp, mail etc), but they don't respond to ping requests at all:Pinging mysite.com [111.222.333.444]:
Ping #1: * [No response]
Ping #2: * [No response]
Ping #3: * [No response]
Ping #4: * [No response]
I asked my DC support about this, and they replied that they disabled ICMP.
Actually, the ping itself is not a problem for me, I don't need it. But I'm concerned that search engine spiders or mail servers or whatever else may use ping to test the availability of the server. Yes, this can be easily done via a HTTP request, but I'm still a little worried.
Should I bother enabling ping? Is it important?
