Need advice on how to stop server hangups

Well I have a server @ United Colo...this is the stuff i have:

Debian
Processor: Intel Pentium IV 2.0GHz w/512K Cache.
Memory: 1GB ECC SDRAM.
Hard Drive: 100GB / 120GB EIDE 7200RPM.

I'm serving mostly 1mb media files that are beeing downloaded through the web. I avaraging around 8mb/s per day. The problem is that the server hangs up sometimes. Since I don't really know much about sever optimization I need your help. What can I do to stop the hangups?

Will it help if I serve one 5mb files instead of five 1mb ones?
How much would it help if i got another gb ram?
