RedirectMatch Problem.. Pls help

The problem was corrected by renaming the .htaccess file to ~htaccess which
means your forum problem was caused by the .htaccess file."
How might this problem have been caused voluntarily/unvoluntarily taking into acct that neither the hoster nor me seems to have interfere with the said file
