Root Email not working correctly?

I just acquired a new server and whenever the server attempts to email me it gets stuck in the queue and gets this message ( a few details changed ):


A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

emailaddy@email.net
SMTP error from remote mailer after MAIL FROM: SIZE=1486:
host vmi-ext.prodigy.net [207.115.**.**]: 553 5.1.8 ... Domain of sender address root@hostname.domain.net does not exist


I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this?
Also... as an afterthought, does anyone know how to *via WHM this was done* re-set the Change System Mail Preferences so all are "is currently not being forwarded" because I think that is whats causing the problem, one states "root's mail is currently being forwarded to " with no email address defined, and even when it is defined, I still get the above error message.
