Using CDOSYS with Merak Mail

CDOSYS is a component from Microsoft bundled with Windows 2000 server, and seems to be the preferred successor to CDONTS for doing email communications from other applications, such as ASP web applications.

It's default behavior when code "send"s a message is to write a file with extension .eml into a "pickup directory", where an SMPT service will find it and send it. CDOSYS can also be configured to connect to the SMTP service directly, but the pickup directory approach seems sensible, since it would work even if the mail service was temporarily out of order. The path of the pickup directory is also configurable.

I was trying to make this all work with an ASP application and an evaluation copy of Merak Mail. There was no problem getting CDOSYS to write proper-looking messages into files in Merak's mail\forward directory, where Merak itself stores messages that can't be sent immediately for whatever reason. Merak documentation is thin on the point, but it seems to be a plausible approach. Alas, it does not work, at least for me.

I wondered if anyone else had tried to get CDOSYS and Merak to work together, or if anyone had a guess what the problem is with my approach. (I did notice that Merak writes its own delayed messages with the file extension .tmp rather than .eml -- maybe that has some effect.)

Any help appreciated.
