What's the deal with duals on Redhat?

Hi,

I was recently going to invest into a dual AMD MP 1.53ghz machine from nocster. After surfing various threads about them most people seem to say linux can't make full use of the dual processers and that it's mostly a waste.

Others seem to argue about it depends on configuration, or the mobo/chips themselves.

I'm currently in a pickle (so to speak). I offer a lot of webspace to my clients, and most utilize it (avg client is using 50-250 mbs) and they often use the cPanel backup feature. Combine those (almost daily) with the webalizer/analog stat bg processes sometimes the load can spike up to 4-7.x while the tar/gzip is going on etc. They often do this during peak times. I can't really yell about resource consumption because they're just using the backup, and I highly recommend them to do so.

The current machine they're on is a 1.46ghz XP with 768mb of ram. I was wondering if duals could handle this kind of activity easier. It's not a constant load, it's mostly 0.10-0.60 but lets say 5 of them backed up at the same time ... ouch.

I'm just curious (without arguing who has better mobos, or chipsets) what is the real deal with Redhat and dual cpus. Are they a waste or are they actually beneifical to a noticable degree?

Thanks.
