Chat System?

Hey, I wasnt quite sure where to post this, so I guess I'll post here.

I have been looking into methods of chatting for some time now, I have looked into java-based chat applets, but with the current Microsoft/Sun displutes, these are difficult, and I have also looked into PHP and ASP chatting, which all come with wonderful <click><click><click><click><click><click> refreshes every second.

I need something like MSN Chat has on their servers (chat.msn.com), where you download the interface and you are no longer restricted by java/php/asp.

Do anyone know where I can get one of these interfaces?
