What is mail doing while I move a site?

Hi boyz and girls,

Maybe a simple problem, but it is bothering me for days now....

I'm soon changing to a dedicated server and I need to move some of my clients accounts then.

So I create their accounts and DNS at the new server, upload their websites and stuff and then switch DNS, as DNS will propagate it will switch showing the old site to the new one.

Sofar no problems (unless somebody is changing his old site and or updating their database, so I should warn them to do not so)

BUT, what about their email ??

For example I have '10 MX mail.domain.com' right now and also the same record in the new server. As DNS will switch, mail will arrive at the new location (which is good, very good), but also at the old location (which is bad What is mail doing while I move a site? ).

So:

1) If one of the clients email isn't emptied a couple of days (holidaybreak, sick, whatever) some of their mail may reside at the old host, while after a few days requesting mail will be from the new server, so some email is lost ?...

2) If the caching-nameserver of client is moving to the new server sooner as elsewhere, client will be 'popping' from the new server, while some mail will still arrive at the old server.

With all your experience:

1) What can I do to push all mail (after switching DNS) to the new server (no matter what) or, if this is not possible,

2) How can I merge the old emailfile to the new emailfile (at the new server) preferably without hasseling the clients?

Who can make me sleep tonight What is mail doing while I move a site?

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated..

Dillard
