OE setting leaving mail on server

I have a customer who said he was not receiving mail for a couple of days. I looked on the server and saw that his Inbox had 78 MB of mail. His account only allows for 100 MB of disc space, and he was at the max. So I figured he had his OE set to leave messages on the server.

So I advised him to modify his OE settings.

Question: If in OE he unchecks the option to leave mail on the server, how/when does all that mail get downloaded? He emailed me back saying even after de-selecting the option, nothing happened. Then I saw that about an hour later he emailed saying all was OK and the mail was downloaded.

While the problem is solved, I'd like to understand how this works. if he's already read all that mail, then de-selects the option, will the mail automatically download?
