Problem with courier-imap..

I just got a dedicated FreeBSD 5.0 machine. So far, all of the ports I installed basically worked out of the box. I even have postfix correctly accepting mail, and delivering it to the ~/Maildir directory.

So.. I read that courier-imap supports (actually, ONLY supports) the Maildir format, so I'm trying to install it. I actually have it running, but it's rejecting all logins. Here's what happens when I try to manually log in via telnet to the imap port:

-bash-2.05b$ telnet localhost imap
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.dhtns.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
* OK Courier-IMAP ready. Copyright 1998-2002 Double Precision, Inc. See COPYING for distribution information.
1 login usery passwordy
1 NO Login failed.

It does this for all accounts..

/var/log/maillog gets this:
Mar 11 10:14:53 leibniz imapd: Connection, ip=[::ffff:127.0.0.1]
Mar 11 10:15:01 leibniz imapd: LOGIN FAILED, ip=[::ffff:127.0.0.1]

If it will help, I can post the imap configuration files.. My goal is not to have it authenticate via mysql or LDAP--just basic unix password authentication.

Any ideas? I've removed and re-installed the port several times, to no avail.
