Widely accetped Chat Room useage???

Basically what the thread title ask... Specifically following this guideline, and would be acceptable:
any type of interactive real-time chat applications that require server resources
Simply linking to a remotely hosted Chat Room, would not create a problem, correct?

But I would still like to know of any chat software that could be used as asked initially.
