phpBB install help.

I am trying to set up a BB on RH 8.0. I have apache up and running as well as php and MySQL.

My problem is that when I hit the install button on phpBB it displays "PHP config on your server does not support the data base type you chose"

MySQL version is 3.23.52. I don't know if it something funky in the way RH installed the packages and I will have to recompile or if it is just blind stupidity on my part.
