SSH full access limited to root!? Argg...
Following is a conversation with BurstNet regarding a server i'm working on:placer14: is anyone availible at the moment
BurstNET: yes
BurstNET: what can i help you with ?
placer14: :-) wonderful...i'm the tech contact working on one of the servers located there and i'm having a bit a of problem getting SSH to work there. is that something you can help me with?
BurstNET: what do you mean ?
BurstNET: you can't ssh to the server ?
placer14: more specifically...i can connect..however I can't find the known_hosts file to allow full permissions on the acct i'm logging in to
placer14: well, the SSH client finds that file, but doesn't find my domain listed
placer14: i assume i need to find that file and edit it accordingly so i can gain full access
BurstNET: `umm
BurstNET: what are you trying to log in as ?
placer14: one of the reseller accts on the server
placer14: do you need the specific acct name?
BurstNET: no
BurstNET: i thought you were logging in as root
placer14: unforuntately, the owners of the server didn't feel it was necessary to give me that access :-(
BurstNET: ok well you need to talk to the owners than
placer14: the only way to get the type of permission i need is to use root access? there's no way around that?
placer14: ?
BurstNET: yes
BurstNET: no way around
Now, i'm not a genius, but *nix systems don't work like this. Either this "tech" didn't know what the F they were talking about or they didn't care. Score one for BurstNet.
So here's my delemna:
I need full SSH access to the server however when i login, I get the following info (prompts are in normal font, italics are what I type):
SSH Server/Alias: typed address here
Connected to server running SSH-1.99-OpenSSH_3.lpl
higherhost.com login: entered username of one of the WHM (reseller accts) on the server (it's not the root)
Found preinstalled 'known_hosts' file.
(I get a prompt saying my domain isn't found in the list, continue anyway? i choose Yes)
File operations disabled, server identity can't be verified.
And then it let's me into the system. But I can't edit anything. :-/ I'd appreciate any help you could provide on this. Thanks in advance.

BTW< the same thing happens when i login with "root". I get that info before I have to put the password in. Thanks for all the fish, BurstNet
