why aren't there more control panels to choose from?
For 18 months now I've been reading this forum, and it seems:Most people like cPanel, except many like me (who want a control panel on the server to offer hosting to nonprofits, family, friends, or just a couple clients) find it too expensive at $50/month...
Some like Plesk, but many find its interface lacking
Lots have Ensim, but are frustrated by the confusing and underdocumented system integration and slow security patches of customized rpm's.
HSphere is on the horizon, but probably too costly for entry level customers.
I have a server at RackShack and read their forums evey day, and especially now that Ensim will charge for the upgrade to the Pro version, I'm wondering...
With so many great programmers, how come someone hasn't come up with a new control panel with the looks and functionality of cPanel (and not all tangled up with RedHat rpm's like Ensim, or more conscious of quick security patches) but at a better price for the NOC's which are left out of their partnership agreement?
For example, if RackShack alone has 6000+ servers, I think in the current market, a new control panel offered for $20 a month, if it was good and well supported, could easily get 1000 - 1500 customers there alone. That would be $240,000-$360,000 a year. I'm surprised no one has tried to tap this unfulfilled market by offering a new stable, nice looking, and well supported entry-level server control panel.
