Hardware problem
I've been trying to build a server for colocation but I can't figure out what piece of hardware is preventing it from booting.I'm running a Tyan S272GNN motherboard, with Dual Xeon processors and 2x512mb PC2100 DDR ECC Registered memory chips.
The problem is I can't get the server to boot. I get no beeps to indicate an error but no video output. I've already sent the board for repair and I was told it was fine. This leaves me with memory or cpu's I guess.
I tried to test the CPU's to try to determine what might be the problem; and I discovered that if both processors are seated on the board, all IDE drives will spin up. When I remove CPU1, the drives will still spin up. Remove both and drives will not spin up. As long as there is a cpu in CPU2 the drives will spin up (I've tested both processors in the slot) but if you seat them in CPU1 drives do not spin up. (Basically as long as one of the chips is in CPU2 the drives spin up)
To me, it would be logical to assume that since the drives only spin up with the processors seated, that both CPUs are in fact functioning properly and it is the memory that is preventing the boot.
Could anyone share their opinions on this?
