Site hacked - now what?

Been online all morning, and suddenly found my site hacked. Can't have been for too long.

Whoever it was simply deleted my index.php and replaced it with an index.html file containing their sig and "owned by...". That appears to be the extent of the attack.

There's also an issue with the server at the moment, which I assume could be connected? There's an error message in CPanel and I cannot backup databases.

My latest backup is only 4 days old, and I've saved the member pages covering the last 60 members to join the forum over the past four days. So any damage to the site is going to be minimal.

Host e-mailed, of course.

Thing is, what now?

What should I expect to follow from this incident?

Is there any specific dialogue I should have with my host now the site hack warning has been sent?

And should I expect more hack attacks on the site?

Are there any particular things I can do to try and help prevent such an incident in future myself, considering that I can only HTML?

This is the first time I've even been hacked. A little flushed bu OK. Guess it's an ironic compliment to be regarded as important enough to be hacked.
