Creating your own web server
Hello,I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask these questions; I've googled them, but was overwhelmed with information.
After reading this forum for a few weeks, I have come to conclusion that no one will ever be satisfied with their hosting, and the chance of me finding a good host that I can afford is slim.
I'm still looking, but it seems like once I find the one, someone posts a message detailing their horrible experience with them. So, I thought it would be fun to try and run my own server.
I'm a complete newb on this matter, but am ready and willing to learn.
Here is what I need/want:
PHP
mySQL
CGI (for matters such as http://movabletype.org/)
-and required modules
traffic logs
ftp (also will be used as a ftp server)
Ability to host multiple domains (3-4)
Here's what I have:
an extra copy of windows XP pro floating around
Linux RedHat (unknown version, is brothers)
extra computer with 40GB HD, at least 256MB RAM, at least 500MHz.. It will be comprised of all of our old parts, so the exact specs will be unknown until I dig through our many bins of parts..
So really what my question is, do you have any links to good, detailed tutorials? Most that I read were for the more advanced users. I need something for a true dummy like me.
Specifically the questions I've been trying to fins are:
What are the advantages/disadvantages of useing Linux vs. Win XP?
If linux is indeed the best choice for me, how should I install it/configure it?
How would I install Perl and needed modules?
how would I install PHP?
mySQL?
Anything else I need to know?
I'm sorry if this is asking a lot. I understand If you just tell me to go google it some more, but If you happen to know of a few sites off the top of your head, I'd love to know. I see this as an adventure, and don't mind spending weeks researching!
Thanks,
Jess
