php issue, undefined function: mail()

hmmmm why is mail() comming up as an undefined function ???

sendmail isn't installed on the system, just exim

is this why

in the php.ini config i have

sendmail= /usr/local/exim/bim/exim -t -i

but it still comes up as undefined
