RedHat 8.0 ... can't compile anything

Hello!

I have just installed RedHat 8.0 in order to experiment with it. I first wanted to upgrade OpenSSL (from source), but it failed during the "make" step. That was ok, I could live with the provided version for now, so I didn't try anything else and just gave up immediately. But then I tried to install Apache, and got the same problem.

The error message was about some functions missing in the installed libraries (from how I interpreted it at that time, but I haven't noted the exact message). So I checked the version number for GCC and found it was 3.x... Since I always been using 2.95 before (always been using RH 7.3) I though this could be the problem (I heard about some bugs/incompatibilities in GCC 3.x a few times before). I couldn't find a binary copy to test this theory.

Any experience or opinion would be appreciated RedHat 8.0 ... can't compile anything
