DoS attack? what is it?

i think i posted in the wrong forum so i'm posting it here. please help.

can anyone tell me about a DoS attack? my tracker says i have only 2K in hits and yet i have been told that i have exceeded 120 GB in bandwidth usage? how can 2K hits have 120 GB in usage?

can hosts manipulate the reports to trackers? if that is so, how can we trust hosts now when we have no idea how much traffic we actually use?
