mysql no longer works (I had deleted the default mysql db)

I had saved it though and the tech support guy brought the deleted db back BUT the mysql server doesn't start at all. I did't check while he was on the phone and now it's the 4th of July weekend so.

any ideas?
I get this when I try via the shell.
ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)
