mod_rewrite help

Hi,

I need to use mod rewrite to change a url like www.domain.com/news/item.php?id=P53 to www.domain.com/news/item.php?id=53_0_2_0

In other words I want users to be able to type in the first one, and apache to return the second one without the user knowing the second one. I'v read a load of mod rewrite guides but canf figure it out.

Any suggestions?
