Corrypted File Systems and FSCK?

The filesystem seems to be badly corrupted. Your server wants to run a
manual FSCK, but I need the up to date root pasword. As soon as a recieve
the root pasword I will run the FSCK and monitor until the server comes
back up.

What is FSCK?

Why does the file system keep corrypting? Nothing out of the ordinary has been installed, but this is the second time its happened, and its been on two different servers.
