What is SSL and how does it work ?

Hello, i want to know what is SSL (Secure Socket Layer) that supostly is secure and Encripted, but if i want to use SSL do i need a Certificate ? Does the SSL utilize one Port or something for Each Client Connected to the Https:// ?
