Free/Public DNS?

Okay, I could use some help rather urgently.

I've got an old box located at school, and we recently changed the network configuration on our box. I don't know the IPs of our nameservers and would really like to get it up and running quickly, as opposed to waiting until I find them out.

The box is up, running merrily, but it's not sending out mail (it's housing a couple mailing lists) because it can't resolve any of the domains.

/etc/resolv.conf became a blank file (!!) when we put in a new network card and set it up. I've tried a few IPs that don't seem to work... I put them in at the top of /etc/resolv.conf, but still can't resolve domains. (I'm not yet sure if it's that it can't reach the servers, or if it's some sort of odd firewall problem -- but we didn't touch the firewall?)

Anyway, are there any DNS servers that are open to the public that I can put in? And just adding them to /etc/resolv.conf is all I need, right? There's nothing I need to do to make it read the new list?
