How long before pages vanish from search engines?

I have been trying to track down this info from Google's website (and others) but have been unsuccessful.

Basically, assuming no intervention, how long does it typically take for a "dead" page to be removed from a search engine? Is this something that usually happens automatically the next time the site is crawled, or...?
