security: which packages need to be kept up2date.

Ok im in a bit of a dilema here.

i have always kept the following packages up to date:

Apache
MySQL
PHP
Exim
QPopper
Samba
Kernel
iptables
gcc
gd

Now the problem i got is that i want to keep everytihng up to date, like glibc.

But, i dont have access to this stuff via rpm, i have to compile them all from source. The reason for this is 1. I dont have access to up2date in redhat, and 2, i compile my kernel from source, like everything else, and when i install rpm versions of things it thinks i have an old kernel cos its looking at the kernel headers rpm.

Now i have no idea how to compile things like glibc, and stuff like that. Are these nessasry to keep up to date for security reasons?

i mean, if i just keep the list that i wrote above up to date is that enough?

thanx
