High load mystery
One of our production servers' load keeps spiking to anywhere between 4 - 60 throughout the day.
I've noted down each time it happens and there's no pattern.
The problem is, whatever is doing it must only last for a couple of seconds at the most because by the time I've noticed, then logged in to run top, the process(es) have finished.
I've had a script running every minute to email me the top processes if the load is higher than 2, but that doesn't seem to be able to catch it either.
Are there any bits of (free) monitoring software which run all the time and could log what's causing the problem? I Googled, but found nothing.
