GZIP is killing my server : /

Our server load has been an issue for a while now.

Recently I have noticed GZIP playing up. Take a look at the following, which I just got from top:

17527 root 19 19 392 392 36 S N 12.7 0.0 0:14 gzip

12.7% CPU!

More evidence:

Top Process %CPU 56.6 gzip
Top Process %CPU 35.6 gzip
Top Process %CPU 28.4 gzip

Why the hell is GZIP causing this? I am starting to worry!
