low-overhead email toaster help

I've successfully made qmail+vpopmail setups before; that's not a problem. But what I'd like to do now is setup a mail toaster (mailserver for multiple, virtual domains) on a VDS running Debian. I don't need webmail, or IMAP. I'm not stuck on qmail - it's a nightmare to administer - any MTA, really, is fine. I've tried (believe me, have I tried) but there are a few problems:

1. All the current instructions I can find for qmail toasters run under "supervise", and that just kills the VDS - load of 1.3 idle. My attempts to get it to run non-supervised on this machine have been unsuccessful.

2. Again, for performance reasons, I don't want to run SQL, and all the non-qmail toaster directions out there seem to be geared towards SQL backends. If I could, I would, but a mailserver with an idle load of 5 is pretty useless.

So, does someone have a link or resource to installing a toaster with a small overhead? I know it has to be possible, but can't get bare installs of qmail and vpopmail to work with each other on the VPS. I'll probably give it a fourth try tonight, but just don't see where the problem is. <sigh> Any pointers would be appreciated...
