Can't install FP extensions and change folder permissions

I don't know if these are related. When trying to install frontpage extensions on an account this is returned:

Error: Cannot create folder "_private".

Checking the folders I see that public_html has permissions 750 but when I try to change it to 755 it switches back to 750. Does anybody know what might be wrong here?
