big problems with gcc

im running gedhat 8 and currently gcc is quite messed up

i cant compile my own files because it gives errors like iostream not found

anyway, im trying to upgrade gcc, but from source

now what im wondering is this

if i just run configure will it install to /usr/bin/gcc /usr/lib/gcc etc or /usr/bin/gcc-version /usr/lib/gcc-version

etc etc

i have read the installation files and it makes absolutly no sense to me. GCC seems to be a hard thing to upgrade. Not only am i gunna have problems getting this new one on, but when i remove the old rpm its gunna mess up any files using the old libs and stuff isn't it?

so what am i meant to do?

i dont understand how i am meant to upgrade gcc from source without messing up the system even more than its messed up now

plus it seems i have to upgrade a million other things the libstdc, glibc, etc

i can see me totally ruining my server big problems with gcc

and no i dont wanna upgrade using rpms cos thats what got the system in the mess that its in now big problems with gcc
