qmail/pop3d Stops Sending and Receiving Mail!

I'm running an ad site that sends out about 25 email notifications per hour. It also uses qmail to send notifications of responses to users' ads.

The problem is that I get a TON of bounced emails, due to people trying to send email to non-existant users at my domain. For example, 123@mydomain.com, 1234@mydomain.com, 567@mydomain.com. All of which don't exist. Stupid spammers are just making them all up.

This is how the bounced email errors look:

<123@mydomain.com>:
Although I'm listed as a best-preference MX or A for that host,
it isn't in my control/locals file, so I don't treat it as local. :

<1234@mydomain.com>:
Although I'm listed as a best-preference MX or A for that host,
it isn't in my control/locals file, so I don't treat it as local. :

and so on...

All these bounced mails end up in my root mailbox. My qmail smtpd stops working... and pop3 also stops working. I think it's due to the high load of that the bouncing email causes.

Anyone have any ideas?
