Rackshack DNS or ISP - You Decide!

For the past 2 years or so I have been a customer at Rackshack and have been using their DNS servers for my clients.

Never had a problem with it!

Over the course of the past week or so, a few of my clients complained that they could not access their sites. After checking their domains names for expiration as well as their name server settings as well as digging Rackshack's DNS, I find absolutely nothing wrong!

So I ask my complaining customers for a traceroute and they all get a result similar to this:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
11/07/03 21:37:18 Fast traceroute domain.com
Trace domain.com failed, no such host

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In other words, thier domain names did not even resolve so the traceroute obviously failed.

Now this clearly shows a DNS problem with their ISP. Funny thing is, I can access their sites just fine.

Why do I have clients who all use different ISP's having the same exact problem. It can't be a coincidence. There's more to it than that. Something is going on here and I can't put my finger on it.

After submitting a TT, I was told it was a problem with the ISP.

OK. Fine. I agree. It is a problem with their ISP but that does not explain what is happening and for the record, they all use the ns1.rackshack.net and ns2.rackshack.net name servers.

My best guess is that the ns_.rackshack.net name servers are not always talking and when someone looks up their site, their ISP's DNS cache does not get an appropriate answer and caches it as non-existent. Could this be the reason or not. If not, what do you think is causing it?

Someone help me out here. I am already losing customers...
