URGENT mysql problem please help

when I try to connect to a mysql database I get this error

Warning: mysql_pconnect(): Link to server lost, unable to reconnect
and sometimes I get this one
Code: 
Warning: mysql_pconnect(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)
can you please help me to figure out the problem and solve it
