Running my own FreeBSD server?
FIrst off, I am working currently with another member of this forum for my primary web-hosting.I do however need to set up my own server to run an IRC server as well as Apache to deliver IRC statistics. My current plan is to use my DSL 256 kbps upstream with 1.5mpbs downstream. I'm going to point to it with dyndns.org (CNAMED from my primary domain). The question of the day though is the server itself. I am planning to run FreeBSD 4.9 (or 4.8). What I am not sure of, is the hardware itself. Obviously with FreeBSD, hardware support can be a problem. I was wondering if someone could recommend the best hardware solution at a reasonable price. Whatever is known to work well with FreeBSD. This is mainly just going to be for an IRC server with minimal use of Apache. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Also in terms of FreeBSD GUI's.. what should I use? GNOME? Xfree86 (or is it freex86 ?)
I was at least anticipating an AMD processor for price, the rest I'm not sure of though. My goal is to keep this as low as possible in the price dept as times are unfortunately rough.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
