Odd email authorisation issue

We have a client who is having serious email problems. They have a number of email accounts but one in particular just stops totally.

It gets to the authorisation part and then the server times out repeatedly. We've tried everything for him, including deleting and recreating the account, changing passwords etc.

The only thing that solves the problem is to Restart our mail servers. That fixes it for maybe 24 hours and then it goes again. Obviously fixing it repeatedly isnt the issue, and we've learnt to check it regularly to catch it before he does, but I'm at a total loss as to whats causing it.

I could possibly understand it if it was all of his email addresses or he alone was suffering but I'm getting exactly the same thing.
