what's better for MySQL: Dual Xeon with IDE or P4 with SCSI? (not newbie)
I have to move my site to new serwer, I'd like to go with something from servermatrix - my budget is (max) about 250$/ mo.
Main problem is that this site is quite popular, about 5-7.000.000 page views /mo, every page view == connection to MySQL database (and some simple queries, 98% simple SELECT with one table and index on WHERE fields).
My current box is (single) P3/1Ghz/512kb + 1GB ECC R + 2x18Gb SCSI mounted on quite powerful server mainboard (Intel STL2) and this configuration is able to handle this load without problems (we have good db optimization, php acceleration, etc. we're moving becouse of traffic costs).
Now I have to choose beetwen:
1). Dual Xeon + 1gb DDR ECC R + 2x 80GB (8mb cache) IDE (everything is powerful except harddrives)
2) P4 2.8 + 1gb DDR (normal, not ECCR i think) + 2x73GB (10k RPM) SCSI (harddrives are powerful but I don't know anything about mainboard, etc.)
And question is - what would you suggest? Please keep in mind that this site is 100% based on MySQL (php + apache + freeBSD) and we have many small files (this is picture gallery where users submits their works) so SCSI drives seems like obvious choice, but what about other components of this P4 configuration? I don't know what kind of stuff servermatrix use but it can't be to expensive, so i'am somehow worried about (for example)mainboard quality, etc. On the other hand Xeon's propably works only with server components (like ECCR memory) so they would be more stable but i think IDE drives are no-no for busy sites (ok, i don't know, i never used ide in servers) like this.
The best configuration offers unfortunetly EV1Servers (I don't need managed service) but they don't offer freebsd right now and i heard horror stories about canceling servers that were DDosed (unfortunetly we were DDosed and this could be done again, i don't want to move my server to other DC some script kiddie) , servermatrix offers floodguard and they propably are better prepared for this kind of attack.
