Can't Resolve Names... Grr!

Our mailserver from time to time randomly refuses to resolve hostnames. Figuring that the upstream nameservers we used were garbage, I decided to install djbdns and let it be its own server.

It advises me to run the following to see if I can reach the 'root' DNS servers:
# dnsq a www.aol.com 192.48.79.30

On the 'troubled' box, this sits there for a while, then just exits. Running it on non-garbage computers here instantaneously yields a ton of records.

I've allowed port 53 (TCP and UDP) through the firewall; trying a "telnet 192.48.79.30 53" here and on the possessed box both connect me and then terminate the connection after a second, so it doesn't seem to be a port problem.

Can someone explain the DNS woes we're having? Mailservers sort of need DNS to deliver mail, and I can't possibly get it working.
