Understanding Router Names
Okay, weird question time again. When I do a traceroute, I'm usually pretty good at figuring out hostnames. eqix.ge-0.0.0.gbr1.ash.nac.net looks like Gigabit Ethernet (ge) in NAC, possibly from Equinox (eqix)? Things like t3- and t1- are similarily obvious, as are most of the location names.
What throws me off are names like this one... It's possible that Adelphia (my cable ISP) just gives their routers weird names, but I think I've seen this designation used before:
p3-02-00-00.r0.nyc90.adelphiacom.net
It's apparent that it's in NYC, but what does the p3 part mean?
And then further down in NAC, I get this hostname:
0.so-2-2-0.gbr2.nwr.nac.net
Would my guess of so = SONET be correct? I'm not so sure on gbr2, either. (GigaBitRouter2?)
It's possible these are 'made up' by providers and don't really mean anything, but I'm assuming that they do have some meaning in most cases? And is there some guide to what they all mean?
