Problem with image linking on subdomains

Hi all,

I've got a problem with image linking on subdomains on Cpanel.

http://www.mydomain.com/images/image.gif

This link brings me to the image.

http://subdomain.mydomain.com/image.gif

This link doesn't bring me to the image, instead it brings me to the index.html file.

When I delete the index.html file it brings me to a directory listing.

Is this a problem with htaccess?
