Apache Virtual Host setup on Installation

We are just setting up 3 servers, Apache 2 which is working for one domain (the primary) but not for any addition of virtual hosts. Bummer. I scanned (for two days) their site and haven't found the answer that makes it work and would like to submit an httpd.conf file to Apache to include (or download) with installation for this type of configuration that clearly shows how to do this using both name and IP virtual hosting (two httpd.conf files then). But before I can develop this it would probably be good to learn it myself, eh?

So, with patience and hoping for some comprehensive, personal instruction I sit and tinker and will check back here to see if anyone has the ability to walk me through this with more than a brief paragraph blurb, so I can (we can) develop a nicely written doc on how to do this (in MS-2000) and donate the doc to the org to help others down the line.

I've written some huge documentation systems and as comprehensive as the Apache docs are (pretty thick), they lack comprehensive examples; for instance, instead of just showing a virtual host block of declarations, they might be improved by showing how to set other parameters higher up in the file, then walking through each section for a particular configuration. Considering the 10's of 1000s (?more?) of users I would think we'd have this by now.

Anyone want to take on a veteran software engineer (fast learner) as a student so I/we can write this up and submit it to Apache and of course, so I can move on to other tasks...

In exchange I'll develop a nice 'on-the-fly' utility, complete with html, Perl and Credit Card processing (ez stuff for me) to modify the file dynamically when new users sign up to be hosted and old users uh, forget to pay their bill.... click...off.... Anyone want to help out give me a shout.
