server setup opinions or ideas please

Currently I have 2 linux servers running Redhat 8 with cpanel. One is used as a main server, the other is a backup server.

The main server has the primary nameserver pointing to it, and the backup server has the secondary nameserver pointing to it, and has a dns trust setup through cpanel to the main server.

The backup server holds the backup done through cpanel, and is there in case of major failure on the main server.

I am looking at upgrading the 2 servers and building my own for the first time. Due to the demise of Redhat 8, etc, I am thinking the best way is to put on Redhat Enterprise, and basically setup the system in the same way as detailed above.

I am also looking at a Windows server for the first time, due to customers requiring ASP, which I currently do not do on my linux servers, and would rather keep seperate to save installing ChiliASP or Apache-ASP.

I was thinking about installing either W2003 Web Edition or W2003 Standard Edition on the windows server, and again running a backup windows server in case of failure. I know you can't run SQL on Web Edition, and if I'm right, have to buy CALS depending on the number of users if using Standard Edition.

Now you have a little background, my questions are:

1. What spec of hardware should I use? The main linux server does use mysql databases. RAID? SCSI? DUAL XEON? RAM?

2. I am not sure how popular SQL Server is in web hosting, and hosting companies seem to be charging alot for it, so do most people host using Access databases and ASP?

3. I was thinking of using the name servers I have now for all servers, and bounce the windows clients through the linux server, for the website, but leave the mail on the linux server, therefore no need to have exchange or another mail client on the windows server.

4. If not the above, which mail client, and control panel should I look at?

5. Depending on what you think above, which configuration of windows? Web Edition, or Standard, and what about Exchange, or SQL?

Hope you all can help. Thanks in advance for your comments.

Dave
