replacing localhost with other name

Just out of curiosity: does anybody know a way to use some other name instead of http;//localhost to open documents on a local machine using Apache? Would be fun to be able to type http;//whatever instead of the usual http;//localhost.

[note: I can't type http colon because that is considered linking and this is my first message, therefore http;]
