smtp problem...Simple!

I get the following error when trying to send mail in squirrel mail.

Warning: fsockopen(): unable to connect to localhost:25 in /home/sisco/public_html/webmail/class/deliver/Deliver_SMTP.class.php on line 40


Also..How do i turn my smtp on/off if i need to? Can you also tell me how I'm supposed to enable it so that I can send email to everyone...@hotmail...@aol....@excite and so on...

I'm on a home server and I followed the installation properly at www.qmailrocks.com.
