Video Streaming Server Hardware

I'm wondering what sort of hardware is most efficient for doing video streaming.

Do streaming servers behave like FTP servers? Where there is relatively low hardware usage and tons of bandwidth only?

Or is it very CPU cycle intensive?

I'm wondering whether it would be more intelligent to get "weaker" P4 systems from server matrix and go through the 1GB bandwidth or get fewer beefed up dual xeons with tons of ram and drive space (like the Total Control Servers).

Anyone doing high bit-rate streaming (like 200/kbps video and up) care to chime in?
